Description (IGDB)

Balan Wonderworld is a wondrous action-platformer game themed around a mysterious musical theatre. The stars of the show will use special abilities from a multitude of characterful costumes as they adventure in the bizarre and imaginary land of Wonderworld. Here memories and vistas from the real world mix with the things that people hold dear. Twelve different tales await our stars in Wonderworld, each with their own unique quirks. They will explore all corners of these labyrinthine stages, using all the tricks and gimmicks hidden along the way, to get to the heart of each touching story.

Histoire (IGDB)

The two main characters who wander into Balan Wonderworld are Emma and Leo. A mysterious theatre leads the duo into a strange new world, full of bizarre sights and whimsical residents. But not all is well in this world, and led by an enigmatic maestro called Balan, the duo must explore the land in a quest to restore happiness and heal the hearts and minds of all they encounter. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a game if this was a simple task! There will be lots of obstacles in Emma and Leo’s way – but fortunately, they were given just tools for the job. Or more specifically, the costumes.

Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka catches a $1.2 million fine over insider trading, but avoids jail time

Yuji Naka, co-creator of Sonic and director of Balan Wonderworld, has received a $1.2 million fine over insider trading. Late last year, Naka was arrested over alleged (at the time) insider trading, having bought stock in Ateam Entertainment Inc, the developer of Dragon Quest Tact and Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, prior to either of the games being publicly announced. Now, as reported by Japanese outlet Jiji (thanks, PC Gamer), Naka has been fined a very hefty amount. The fine is in two parts, one being a not too much by comparison ¥2 million (about $14,000) charge, the other being a further ¥171 million (roughly $1.2 million) penalty. As surmised by SEGAbits, a report from Yahoo News notes that he was handed a 2.5 year prison sentence, but in turn was also given a four year suspension. He apparently showed "remorse," leading to the suspended sentence. Essentially, the game developer won't actually be going to prison, though if he does anything else illegal that suspension can be wiped out. So unless Naka decides to be a bit silly, I wouldn't expect to hear anything about him going to prison. Read more

Balan Wonderworld studio Arzest is the lead developer on Sonic Superstars

Sonic's recently announced next game Sonic Superstars is being developed by Arzest, probably best known as the team behind Balan Wonderworld. Sonic Superstars was easily the best reveal at Summer Game Fest earlier this week, as it looks like an incredibly fun return to the series' classic 2D gameplay, with some fresh twists. But it turns out the game is mainly being developed by a non-Sega studio, Arzest, who you'll probably remember as being behind Balan Wonderworld, a game that I would not describe as being well received. In an interview with VGC, Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka shared that Arzest would be developing the latest Sonic title, which makes a lot of sense considering the studio was founded by original Sonic designer Naoto Oshima. Interestingly, though,Sega initially approached Sonic Mania director Christian Whitehead, but plans didn't work out. "When we were making Sonic Mania and the game was finished and Chris was done, we had a conversation with Chris and the team about what the next 2D game we make should be," Iizuka told VGC. "We had some concepts and ideas laid out between the teams but we couldn’t kick off the project. And so it disappeared for a while with Chris and the team. Read more

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)

Video Chums 82/100

« If you have a soft spot for classic 3D platformers and imaginative game worlds, you'll have a lovely time with Balan Wonderworld. With a heartfelt story, plenty of cuteness, a clever costume system, and oodles of stages to master; it's one incredible adventure. »

Multiplayer.it 70/100

« Balan Wonderworld has a strong artistic direction and an amazing soundtrack but also many limitations in terms of gameplay and graphics. »

PLAY 70/100

« While not reaching its full potential, Balan Wonderworld is a grand and well designed adventure, which runs superbly on PS5. It’s perfect for family co-op play. [Issue#1, p.76] »

Hobby Consolas 68/100

« Mixed feelings: graphics and sound offer a surreal and engaging experience, but gameplay wise, several camera hiccups and uneven level design may become frustrating. Balan is able to appeal to your inner child... If that child is a patient one. »

Worth Playing 65/100

« Balan Wonderworld is a great idea on paper, and it's perfectly playable from start to finish, but it's held back by some baffling design decisions and boring gameplay. The idea of a protagonist who swaps between costumes to collect Mario-style shines could be great, but the costumes are too simple, the environments are too boring, and the gameplay is too basic. It could possibly be a good game for extremely young players due to its low difficulty and cartoony graphics, but even then, I would recommend one of the many other offerings intended for that demographic instead. »

GameSpew 60/100

« If you’re the patient sort, chances are you’ll have a good time with Balan Wonderworld overall. Costume management is clunky, but you’ll deal with it in order to find the secrets hidden within each world, and you won’t be too perturbed by the eagerly respawning enemies and repetitive Balan Bout sequences. For most players though, everything combined will probably prove to be a little too much. Balan Wonderworld is a game that’s capable of bringing out both delight and dismay in its players, though it serves up a little too much of the latter at times to be easily recommended. »

TheSixthAxis 60/100

« Balan Wonderworld is a passable platformer marred by a string of increasingly baffling design decisions. It has charm by the bucketload and off-the-wall concepts that land well in spite of themselves, but the experience is inconsistent at best and frustrating at worst. There is a good game in here somewhere, and it is great fun at points, but waiting for those points isn’t really worth it. »

Shacknews 60/100

« The finished state of Balan Wonderworld is disappointing to say the least. For all of its style, I was really interested to see how they would expand upon the preview. The aesthetic and characters are there, the music is captivating, the level design made me want to explore and experiment where I could, and the abilities mostly gave me options to do so. However, these things are held down by a lot of contrivances and outright holes in either functionality or context. »

PounceUwU 5/10

« I understand the hate this game receives, but the dance scenes at the end of a level are divine. For that alone, the game is worth playing. »

BatNurse 2/10

« I was actually pretty excited for this game and I'll be honest I did not watch anything on it beforehand. I'm sure there's a way to make the whole one button thing work, not sure how but they didn't accomplish that here. It does seem like they tried to make something interesting but it just failed. I had high hopes and thought it'd at least be a fun time but this is just a reminder to watch reviews before you buy. »

NianB_505 5/10

« quello che sembra una demo è purtroppo un gioco completo venduto a un prezzo boostato con fin troppi problemi che annoia in poco tempo con un level design pigro e un gameplay legnoso e facile. 3.2/10 »

DevaSystem 0/10

« Alright, so I wanna make this VERY clear.... The 10 ratings are by users with well... Only one review to their account. I don't use review sites outside of reference but because either devs or bots want to make this seem like a wrongfully hated game... I gotta do my part in giving it a 0. Realistically it's a 1. Read below as for why: They spent all the budget on the cutscenes... No for real though the cutscenes resemble end of service ps3 era anime like graghics but when you play the **** boy! It lookslike a horrible GameCube tech demo. The game runs like ****, I'm talking 15-45ish frames with background objects going even worse. Play it on modern Gen hardware? It's more consistently 50 or so frames but that's not a complement. This is bad game engine optimization. Game looks like outdated no budget trash. On a very powerful system.... It should have zero lag. This is incompetence. Now allow me to lecture you the story... Drugs. No, no, I mean it has no narrative. No dialog other than balan ego stroking. There's literally nothing here man. It's a vacant story with bad cutscenes that look like they were pitched by a middleschooler. Npcs? Why are they HUGE? Why does everyone dance? Soundtrack is also incredibly mediocre it isn't great. Stop it. Npcs don't fade out they just pop out. Anytime you're close poof gone. Vanished. Now let's talk sound design... Not great. Hey, ho, whaho. That's the jump sounds. They get old... FAST. balan is literally Cappy but without any charm. He has horibble, as others put it copy and paste QTE sequences because yeah.... They're the same. Every. Single. Time. Trophies of balan... Look the exact same and they insist on showing you a big pop-up screen every time you get one. Why? Next let's talk about damage... You'll get hurt by moving objects that don't even crush or squeeze you or fall onto you. Yeah just touching them is enough to get an ouchie. The big part... Power ups. I wanted to save this one for later, so you can hold like 3 to start the game... And that should tell you puzzles will be simple. Here's why... Some powers are simple as a jump. Spin jump. Yoshi jump. Bubble jump. Slam jump. Jump with electricity and can swim verrrrry sloooooow, dolphin can swim faster. Some powers can't even jump. It's Mario you jump on heads and they die. Bosses = 3 hit kill. Bosses lack any depth whatsoever it's just hit a projectile and then they loop an animation and throw more stuff for you to throw back at them. Literally sonic the hedgehog had more depth than this. F*** it even bubsy had better bosses. Even Alex Kidd. Alright I'm gonna a make this blatant as possible the game fricken ****. The endgame... Chao gar... Sorry, I meant TiMs garden. You find droplets scattered across every level and mini game, you can throw them at color coded flower fields in the overworld hub.... Because you totally need colored flowers to drop colored droplets... And basically they glitch out like crazy and TiMs follow you around making weird mentally challenged Pokémon like noises. Why do they follow you? Who knows. But theydo automated tasks and it makes a ticker go up and at different numbers you unlock more stuff for your TiMs to like play or whatever... This doesn't do crap for you btw. Oh yeah you can breed them... How? Just throw the small Tim at the big Tim... Yikes. »

Bradyherbst7 1/10

« How does a game like Balan Wonderworld even exist? I'm not exaggerating, this is legitimately the worst game I have ever played. There is nothing good about it. It looks and runs like crap, everything is a blatant rip-off of Mario Odyssey, the power-ups are all terrible, good level design is not in these dev's vocabulary because A the level design ****, and B all of the levels can be completed in max 3 minutes each. Additionally, by far THE worst part of the game (Which is difficult to pick) is the copy and paste balan bout QTE sequences. There is nothing redeeming about this game, and if there is a good idea, best bets is that it was probably stolen. I give it a single point instead of a zero because the prerendered cutscenes do look okay, even though the storytelling through them is terrible. »

angeldbh 10/10

« The choice of psychological themes was simply unique. I love music in video games and I thought the choreography of the characters was really beautiful. »

jake999 2/10

« this **** the definition of garabage! the most **** QUALITY GAME I THINK I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!! SERIOUSLY THIS IS **** UP AND LAZY AS HELL!! even sonic forces is better than this! sonic forces atleast had ambition and soul but there's no **** soul behind any of this game!! it's soulless! »
