Sorti le 9 novembre 2004 sur PlayStation 2 et PlayStation Portable, Gretzky NHL 2005 est un jeu de sport développé par Page 44 Studios et édité par Sony Computer Entertainment. Le titre propose de retrouver l'ambiance du hockey sur glace à travers des animations faciales détaillées pour les joueurs, une compatibilité avec l'EyeToy permettant d'intégrer son propre visage dans la partie, ainsi que des patinoires enrichies disposant d'introductions spécifiques, de corne de but personnalisées et de foules interactives.
Côté contenu, l'expérience s'articule autour de plusieurs modes de jeu : un mode Tournoi personnalisable, un mode Franchise où l'on endosse le rôle de propriétaire, un mode En ligne offrant la possibilité de télécharger des effectifs mis à jour, et un mode Rivalité permettant de revivre des confrontations historiques. La presse spécialisée a globalement apprécié l'équilibre trouvé entre arcade et simulation ainsi que la richesse des modes proposés ; IGN soulignait notamment un bon mélange de rythme rapide et d'approche simu, tout en notant que certains éléments restaient génériques. De son côté, Cheat Code Central mettait en avant la longévité offerte par la multitude de modes, le jeu en ligne et les contenus à débloquer, dont la présence de Wayne Gretzky lui-même.

« It's a good blend of fast-paced and sim-style hockey, and it's got plenty of modes to keep gamers busy. While many elements of the game are a bit generic the fact that the gameplay is fun and challenging makes up for a relative lack of personality. »
