Sorti le 22 décembre 2005 sur PlayStation 2, Kingdom Hearts II est un jeu d’aventure et de rôle développé par Square Enix Product Development Division 1 et édité par Buena Vista Games, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe et Square Enix. Il s’agit de l’épisode principal de la série depuis la collaboration Disney Interactive et Square de 2002.
Le joueur y progresse à travers différents niveaux appelés mondes, qui reprennent pour beaucoup des lieux issus des œuvres Disney, auxquels s’ajoutent des mondes originaux créés pour la série. Un an après les événements de Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Sora, Donald et Goofy se réveillent à Twilight Town, bien décidés à retrouver Riku et le roi Mickey. Ils découvrent cependant que les Heartless sont revenus, et que de nouveaux ennemis ont fait leur apparition pendant leur sommeil. Leur quête les amène à affronter les Heartless une fois de plus, tout en perçant les nombreux secrets qui entourent Ansem et la mystérieuse Organisation XIII.
Gaming Age a souligné l’attrait du titre, évoquant des personnages et des scénarios proches du cœur de beaucoup, ainsi qu’un gameplay simple mais addictif. GameShark a parlé d’une œuvre émotionnellement inspirante, peut-être le meilleur RPG de l’année. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic le considèrent comme le meilleur jeu de la saga, avec une bande-son incroyable et des personnages mémorables ; un autre, à propos de la version Final Mix, le décrit comme l’un des meilleurs jeux vidéo de tous les temps, encore l’un des meilleurs action-RPG vingt ans après. Le jeu affiche une note agrégée de 89,22.
Il faut compter environ 32 heures pour terminer l’histoire principale, et environ 69 heures pour une complétion intégrale.
