Sorti le 24 septembre 2001 sur PlayStation 2, Silent Hill 2 constitue la deuxième entrée de la franchise éponyme. Développé par Team Silent et édité par Konami, ce titre s'inscrit dans les genres de l'aventure et de la réflexion-puzzle, tout en proposant une expérience de survival horror psychologique à la troisième personne, centrée sur la narration.
L'intrigue suit James Sunderland, un homme qui reçoit une lettre apparemment envoyée par son épouse Mary, décédée trois ans plus tôt. Celle-ci l'invite à la retrouver dans leur « lieu spécial » à Silent Hill, une ville enveloppée de brouillard. À son arrivée, James découvre que la route d'accès est bloquée, le contraignant à stationner près de toilettes abandonnées, point de départ de son exploration des mystères de la ville et de son propre passé.
Le gameplay met l'accent sur le combat, l'exploration et la résolution d'énigmes au service de l'histoire. Pour achever l'intrigue principale, il faut compter environ huit heures, tandis qu'une complétion intégrale demande près de quinze heures et demie.
Côté réception, le jeu bénéficie d'une note agrégée de 90,60. La presse a salué le respect témoigné à l'œuvre originale, IGN Japan estimant que ce « remake » réussit à transposer un récit classique dépeignant la faiblesse humaine à l'ère moderne. PSX Brasil a souligné que l'équipe Bloober Team livrait là son meilleur projet en recréant et actualisant un héritage considéré comme l'un des plus grands de l'histoire du jeu vidéo. Du côté des joueurs, les avis sur Metacritic qualifient l'expérience de « chef-d'œuvre horrifique » à l'histoire « incroyablement profonde, émotionnelle et psychologique », louant une atmosphère effrayante, une bande-son magnifique, ainsi que des combats et des énigmes jugés parfaits.

« PS1 Silent Hill was an amazing game and then PS2 Silent Hill 2 came out and it was nowhere near as good. Resident Evil remakes they made the combat more dynamic, but these developers thought it was a good idea to pad out boring old school gameplay twice as long as the original. Silent Hill f might have been just as much as slog with the gameplay, but story, visuals and local was at least interesting. Even if the endings kind of wasn't. DNF when I found out this 16 to 18 hours versus original 8 to 9 nine hours. I was bored senseless within two hours. »
« I don't think just saying it is a masterpiece is enough. It's the best psychological horror game ever made with an excellent written story and characters. For me the best part of this game is that you don't only care about the protagonist but for all the characters. The soundtrack is on point in each scene. The combat is good for a survival horror game. Just the story of the game is enough to make it a 10/10 »
