The Dig
Description (IGDB)
In the dead of space, something is alive. A deep space adventure by Sean Clark in collaboration with filmmaker Steven Spielberg. You've saved the Earth from Total Destruction. Now, Can you save yourself? An asteroid the size of a small moon is on a crash course toward Earth, and only NASA veteran Boston Low has the expertise to stop it. Along for the ride are award-winning journalist Maggie Robbins and internationally renowned geologist Ludger Brink. Once the wayward asteroid is nuked into a safe orbit, the trio conducts a routine examination of the rocky surface. What they uncover is anything but routine. Low, Brink and Robbins unwittingly trigger a mechanism that transforms the asteroid into a crystal-like spacecraft. The team is hurled across the galaxy to a planet so desolate, Brink is moved to name it Cocytus, after the 9th circle of Hell in Dante's Inferno. The bleak landscape was obviously once home to a highly enveloped civilization, with remnants of sophisticated architecture, advanced technology and an intricate network of underground tunnels. But no Cocytans. Who were the original inhabitants of this once rich empire-turned-wasteland? What are those apparitions that mysteriously appear from time to time? Why have Low, Robbins and Brink been brought to this place? And how can Low keep his team from unraveling in the face of such uncertainly? To return to Earth, the must dig for answer, both on the planet's surface and deep within themselves. From the combined talents of LucasArts and legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes an epic adventure that plunges headlong into the very core of the unknown. And takes you with it.

I still love The Dig despite just about everything
Past Perfect is a retrospective column in which we look back into gaming history to see whether old favourites are still worth playing today.I love The Dig. While I definitely played it in 1995, I’ve almost no memories of that. But the last time I played it in 2011, I rediscovered a LucasArts adventure that felt like something truly special, something unique in their oeuvre, and something that hit the sweet spot of the science fiction I most enjoy. In this difficult period, returning to it sounded just the ticket. (more…)

« Schöne Grafiken und Technik auf dem Höhepunkt. Stephen Spielberg liefert Grundstory. »
« At first interesting story, but obtuse puzzles, boring dialog and uneventful adventure bring it down. »
« Chaotické prostředí s nemožností dohrát hru bez návodu. Myslel jsem si že je to příjemná a originální adventura, ale i s návodem jsem se trápil a ani jsem hru nedohrál. »
« First teribble story from Lucas Arts. Lag of humor, sense and IQ. Technically, even for this time, crap! Sound and Visuals seems has been created in hurry (look only at the "cutscenes"(packed?compressed?). Riddles? Adventure? Okay it is Point and click, but at this time LucasArts already proofed they can do it(Maniac Mansion, ZAK McKracken, Monkey Island). The riddles are mindless and elementary level. Adventure uses the typical pathos, USA = World Best, Germany = Evil, Women = dumb and playing though guy. Gamestorystatement = Immortality is not good, be a good human and die as planned ;) »
« When I first played The Dig, back in 1995, I wasn't too convinced that I would like it as much as any other LucasArts game. The game interface presented a serious change from the well known Scumm system and the fact of having no verbs for actions left me a bit annoyed. The conventional LucasArts point-and-click system changed to a simpler version and, instead of selecting actions and then click the things on the screen, we simply clicked things on screen and made them happen. When I realized, I was just loving the new interface and things started to run easily, after all. After a very direct and pleasurable introduction, we take the role of NASA's commander Boston Low. Along with other crew members, journalist Maggie Robbins and archaeologist Brink, our mission is successfully destroy a meteor approaching Earth and make sure the team gets back alive. But, during the mission, something unexpected happens and the three crew members get teleported to an unknown galaxy, far away from their own. Trapped within an apparently dead alien world, our main mission changes and the priority of the team is to get back to Earth. I will not talk about any important detail of the story. All I can tell you is that The Dig is, by far, one of the best graphic adventure games ever done! Amazing story, great atmosphere all along and excellent graphics make it extremely appealing to adventure fans. The plot is so deep and well conceived that I remember crying at the end of the game. Yes, crying with my full 18! The Dig revealed itself as an life lesson, a beautiful piece of art (videogame) capable of making us reach the peaks of sensitivity! Even with great games like The Secret of Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, The Dig was also the first game from LucasArts to present a mature content instead of a comic story and characters. The final result was great, I assure you! The Dig is not a very long game, but it surely can entertain you for days and make you wish a movie version was made! Just play it and you will be glad you did it. After that, you'll never be the same again! »
« A friend lent me a copy. After i played it - i bought my own. I really loved that game! :) sci-fi, excellent animation, mysterious plot involving an alien race of higher intelligence and its disappearance, beautiful music - what not to love. This game is a classic and a must for any adventure enthusiast. Word, son! :)) »
« This game was something of a marvel when I first played it. The animation was gorgeous, the voice acting was some of the best I had ever heard in a video game (well.... at the time at least.) Visually it looked on par with something Disney (old school hand drawn Disney.) It was clear the production quality was on par with any animated Hollywood feature (at the time.) Why this alone didn't gain it more attention baffles me. The story is phenomenal, epic in every sense. Also unique (for the time.) You could clearly see Spielburg's influence. It's clear that allot of work went into this game and this was just the tip of the narrative iceberg. Clearly this story was meant to continue, why it never did saddens me deeply. However, the real star here has to be the musical score. It adds such depth and majesty that every scene is given such power. Do yourself a favor, if you never intend to play the game, at least listen to the soundtrack. Overall: The Dig a hidden jewel that many overlooked. While some elements are a bit dated, the story and music are timeless. If any game deserves an HD overhaul, it's this one. »
« Classic LucasArts point-and-click adventure. You play as one of astronauts sent to a mysterious asteroid traveling towards Earth. As it turns out, not everything is as it seems and the space journey will lead you to visit multiple fantastic sci-fi places and solve fascinating mysteries. The story is really engrossing! Retro cartoon graphics can be really enjoyable. Atmospheric soundtrack by Michael Land is fabulous. One of my favorite adventure games! »
