Twisted Metal: Black, développé par Incognito Entertainment et publié par Sony Computer Entertainment, est un jeu de tir et de course sorti le 18 juin 2001 sur PlayStation 2. Cinquième opus de la série, il propose un univers alternatif plus sombre situé dans l'esprit de Needles Kane, où le personnage Black est envoyé en mission pour retrouver et assassiner un Calypso plus maléfique, sans que l'identité de son commanditaire soit jamais révélée. Une variante multijoueur en ligne, Twisted Metal: Black Online, a par la suite été proposée gratuitement. Le jeu utilise le moteur Kinetica et affiche une note agrégée de 85,50. Selon les données disponibles, une partie de l'histoire principale demanderait environ quatre heures, contre quatorze pour une approche complétiste. La presse a salué son ambiance sonore, GamePen évoquant un rendu « très perturbant, dans le style de Nine Inch Nails, très cool et très sombre, s'intégrant parfaitement au jeu », tandis qu'IGN a relevé la posture des concepteurs vis-à-vis des précédents jeux de combat automobile. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont apprécié les cinématiques et les histoires personnelles des conducteurs, tout en jugeant certaines interfaces perfectibles en fin de niveau.

« 10/10 in pure fun and nostalgia factor. Its was a superb game at the time, but the controls and physics do show its age as you do often feel like your sliding around , and often wish you could go back to a time when you didn't know a better control scheme existed. Overall still one of the best car combat games ever made, still worth checking out (almost mandatory even) in 2025 when I'm writing this, and beyond . »
« The best "Twisted Metal" ever made. This 'M' rated car combat game has a darker tone than its predecessors. It's also much bigger with larger maps and more content than before. With its refined story mode (which can be played in co-op) and competitive multiplayer, "Black" is an entertaining package. It's an addicting shooter much like the original "Halo" on Xbox. I would rate it with a 9.3 out of 10. »

A dark 'M' rated reboot, "Black" refined the mechanics of its predecessors to perfection. Featuring a horror-based story mode (which can be played in co-op) and local competitive multiplayer, it offers plenty of challenges and maps to master. Like "Metal Gear Solid 2" and "Tony Hawk 3", this sequel really pushed the capabilities of the console. It is a true classic. I would rate it with a 9.1 out of 10. »
