Donkey Kong 3, développé par Nintendo R&D1 et édité par Nintendo, est sorti sur borne d'arcade le 31 octobre 1983. Ce titre mêlant tir, arcade et plateforme met en scène Stanley, un exterminateur, dont la serre est envahie par Donkey Kong réfugié dans les poutres et provoquant l'essaimage d'insectes destinés à détruire ses fleurs. Armé d'un vaporisateur, Stanley doit éliminer les abeilles et chasser le singe avant qu'il ne dévore ses cinq fleurs, en le aspergeant de spray. L'accueil critique mesuré par une note agrégée de 59,65 reflète des avis partagés, certains joueurs déclarant sur Metacritic n'avoir jamais aimé les jeux vidéo en général, tandis que d'autres affirment avoir toujours été de grands fans de la série arcade Donkey Kong et particulièrement de ce volet, leur favori depuis leur première partie.

« Now I was never one that liked videogames. From the games that rewarded you to kill people and women, sometimes children, they always seemed like a waste of someone's time. That being said, my son Jonathans was always super into them, in fact he used to seek out of the house to go to the arcade with his friends. This came to a head when for my 70th birthday he bought me an arcade cabinet of Donkey Kong 3 as a joke. And honestly, I'm glad he did. There's no killing, no kidnapping, no wars, you just protect your garden from bees and a gorilla. My husband, who has the same views as I do, also found the fun in this cabinet and we sometimes play together. I even got my good friend Tim to try it, and I think he had his fun, although he didn't show it. With this game and others like that new Tetris thing I'm glad games have moved out of that barbaric and frankly disgusting phase of killing and those gay characters and hope they continue down this path for the future long after I'm gone. »
« Now I've personally always been a massive fan of both the Donkey Kong arcade series and this game in particular, it was always my favorite ever since I first played it back in arcades. It may be a simple vertical shooter, but that's all it really needs to be. It's a fun game at its core, and it doesn't need half baked mechanics or tailer bait to do that. The arcade and this game will always be why I look at older gaming with a fondness, modern games will never be able to top it. »
« As someone who didn't like Donkey Kongs 1 and 2, I can say with confidence that this game made me a fan of the series. The gameplay is just so fun and Stanley is a much better character than Jumpman, who tried to murder a baby monkey back in Donkey Kong 2. Theres no damsel in distress or King Kong rip-offs here, it's just an ape trying to destroy your garden with bees and you have to defend it. And this version allows for so many acceptability options that really anyone can play it how they want. This game is a must play for anyone who enjoys this series and I personally can't wait to see what they do next for the series. »
« after the first two games showed us the timeless battle between the ape and Jumpman, the third entry switches our protagonist to Stanley, who needs to protect his flowers from bees that the monkey is throwing down. This game plays as a vertical shooter, as you need to spray both the bees and Donkey Kongs ass to protect your garden, and it feels amazing to do so. the need to keep on top of both things adds this hectic elements that the other two installments just lacked due to them being platformers, and this makes the new gameplay insanely addictive and fun. you will not get a single moment of rest during these stages as you need to do a tightrope walk while preforming a juggling act. there might not be much of a story, but this is the kind of game that just doesn't need one to be amazing, it's already perfect and honestly adding a story would just run the risk bloating what's already there. and features like leaderboards and different modes and ways to play the game makes sure that you'll keep coming back for one more game. everything is done so well that while I was skeptical of them completely switching up the formula and story they had, I can confidently say that Nintendo really knocked it out of the park with this new style and I for one can't wait to see what they do for Donkey Kong 4. »
